WhisperKOOL and Wine Guardian both build cooling units made for wine cellars. Wine Majesty is an authorized Wine Guardian dealer and does not sell WhisperKOOL, so this comparison sticks to what each brand publishes itself. Sources are listed at the end.
The Short Answer
Both brands cover the same basic system types: through-the-wall, fully ducted self-contained, ducted split and ductless split. The brand matters less than picking the right system type for your room and then a model whose published capacity fits your cellar. Choose the type first, then compare specific models.
System Types Side by Side
| System type | WhisperKOOL (published range) | Wine Guardian (models we carry) |
|---|---|---|
| Through-the-wall, self-contained | 1,453 to 6,131 BTU/h | TTW01B, TTW02B, TTW04B: 1,440, 2,650 and 3,760 BTU/h at 75Β°F condenser air |
| Fully ducted, self-contained | 2,688 to 6,025 BTU/h | D025, D050, D088, D200: rated from 250 to 2,000 cu ft (D025) up to 1,500 to 7,000 cu ft (D200) |
| Ducted split | 3,120 to 12,530 BTU/h | DS025, DS050, DS088, DS200: 3,485 to 15,785 BTU/h at 80Β°F |
| Ductless split | 1,730 to 8,500 BTU/h | SS018 ductless split; CS025 and CS050 ceiling mount splits (2,755 and 4,050 BTU/h) |
Each brand rates capacity at its own test conditions, so two BTU numbers from different brands are not directly comparable. When you shortlist a model, ask for its capacity at your cellar temperature and at the temperature of the space where its heat goes.
How to Pick the System Type
- Through-the-wall: one unit set into a cellar wall. The back releases heat into the room behind it, so that room has to be large and ventilated enough to take it, unless you add an exhaust duct.
- Fully ducted, self-contained: the unit sits outside the cellar, in a mechanical room, attic or garage, and ducts carry cold air in and return air out. Nothing is mounted on the cellar walls except the grilles.
- Ducted split: the indoor fan coil sits outside the cellar and ducts into it, while the condensing unit goes outdoors. The compressor and its heat stay outside the house.
- Ductless split and ceiling mount: the indoor section mounts in the cellar, on or through a wall, or in the ceiling for the CS units, and connects to an outdoor condensing unit.
Through-the-wall and ducted self-contained units arrive as one piece, so no refrigerant lines are connected on site. Every split system needs a licensed refrigeration technician to run and charge the line set between the two sections; Wine Guardian does not include the line set.
Warranty
Wine Guardian's standard warranty covers parts for 25 months and labor for 13 months from the original invoice date, for the original buyer. Labor is reimbursed only when a Wine Guardian representative approves the work before it starts. The optional Platinum warranty covers parts and labor for 25 months, plus compressor, evaporator and condenser parts to 61 months.
WhisperKOOL publishes its terms on its Warranty Information page. Check them for the specific model you are considering.
Before You Choose Either Brand
- Measure the cellar volume in cubic feet (length Γ width Γ height).
- Check insulation and vapor barrier against the minimums in the installation manual of the unit you are considering.
- Count the glass. Glass walls and doors add a lot of heat load.
- Decide where the unit's heat will go: the room behind the wall, a duct run to another space, or outdoors.
Our Wine Guardian sizing guide walks through the numbers, and the installation guide covers what each system type needs on site.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Wine Majesty sell WhisperKOOL?
No. We are an authorized dealer for Wine Guardian and Breezaire cellar cooling.
Is Wine Guardian better than WhisperKOOL?
Neither is better for every cellar. Both offer the same main system types. Pick the type that fits your room, then compare the published capacity of specific models at your conditions.
Do I need a technician?
For any split system, yes: a licensed refrigeration technician connects and charges the line set. Through-the-wall and ducted self-contained units need no refrigerant work, though ducted units still need a duct run and the right electrical supply.
What warranty does Wine Guardian offer?
25 months parts and 13 months labor under the standard warranty, with an optional Platinum warranty for longer coverage. See our Wine Guardian warranty page.
