That's why you keep seeing this size in showrooms and design plans. The problem is that "24-inch Allavino built-in" returns a dozen SKUs, and the differences between them β capacity, zone count, hinge side, door color, towel bar handle, depth β are where most buyers get stuck.
This guide walks through every meaningful decision so you can pick once and not regret it. We sell these units every day, and the patterns that drive returns and post-purchase regret are predictable. We'll flag them as we go.
Why 24 inches is the right starting point
The 24-inch wide x 34-inch tall undercounter opening is the most common cabinet rough-in in residential kitchens. If you have an empty space next to your range or under an island overhang, it's almost certainly this size. Allavino's FlexCount II 56-bottle units are built to 23.4 inches wide, 33.9 inches tall, and 23.6 inches deep β the modern undercounter standard.
Going wider (30 inches or 36 inches) gets you more capacity but locks you out of standard cabinetry. Going narrower (15 inches) cuts capacity by more than half. The 24-inch class is where you get the most bottles per dollar without custom millwork.
The other reason to start here: every 24-inch Allavino unit, from the 56-bottle undercounter to the 177-bottle full-height column, uses the same front-venting cooling system. That means any of them can be installed flush with surrounding cabinets β no breathing room on the sides or top, no special enclosure, no airflow gymnastics. That's what "built-in capable" actually means, and it's not true of cheap freestanding wine fridges that look the same on the showroom floor.

Two things to notice. First, the column units (anything taller than 34 inches) are 27 inches deep β three inches deeper than the undercounter. That matters in shallow cabinet runs and especially in galley kitchens. Measure your opening front-to-back before you fall in love with a 172-bottle column. Second, the Vite II 99 is the only option in the 21.5-to-23.2-inch depth range. If you have a shallower wall cavity, that's the unit to look at.
Single zone vs dual zone: the decision most buyers get wrong
If you drink mostly the same style of wine β say, you collect Burgundy or you're a Napa Cab household β you want a single zone. Period. You'll get more bottles in the same cabinet (177 vs 172 in the full-height column, 128 vs 121 in the mid-column), and you'll spend less. Single zone units hold the entire interior at one temperature, which you'll typically set to 55Β°F for long-term storage.
Dual zone is the right call when both of these are true:
- You actively drink both reds and whites, and you serve from the unit (not just store)
- You want serving temperatures, not storage temperatures, for at least part of your collection
The reason: dual zone exists so you can hold reds in the upper zone at 60β65Β°F (their serving range) and whites or sparklings in the lower zone at 45β50Β°F. If you're using the unit for long-term aging, both zones get set to 55Β°F and you've paid extra for nothing.
The trap we see: someone buys dual zone "to be safe," then sets both zones to 55Β°F, and a year later realizes they gave up bottles and spent more for a feature they never use. If aging is the goal, single zone is the better buy.

How to size: bottles you have vs bottles you'll have
The capacity number on the box (56, 99, 121, 128, 172, 177) is calculated using standard 750ml Bordeaux bottles. Real-world capacity is lower the moment you start storing Burgundy bottles (wider shoulders, fewer per shelf), Champagne (taller and wider), or anything in a magnum.
Plan for 75β80% of stated capacity if your collection is mixed. A "56-bottle" unit realistically holds 42β45 mixed bottles in daily use.
The second rule: pick a unit one class bigger than your current collection. Collections grow. The cost difference between a 56-bottle and a 121-bottle is roughly $450 β and the regret of having to buy a second unit two years later is much larger. The 121-bottle dual zone or 128-bottle single zone is the sweet spot for active collectors who don't already need a dedicated cellar room.

Built-in installation: what your contractor needs to know
The "built-in capable" label means the unit can be installed with zero clearance on the sides and top. Front venting handles all the heat exchange. But "zero clearance" doesn't mean "no requirements." Here's what actually matters at install:
Cabinet opening. Add 1/4 inch to each side and 1/4 inch at the top to the unit's listed dimensions. For the 56-bottle undercounter (23.4" wide), cut the opening at 24 inches wide. For the columns (23.5" wide), 24 inches wide is also correct. Tight-fit cabinetry is what makes these units look factory-integrated.
Front grille clearance. The front vent at the base of the unit needs to stay unobstructed. Don't trim it with a kick plate, don't run a finished floor across it, and don't add an undercabinet drawer that blocks airflow at the bottom three inches.
Rear clearance. You need 1β2 inches behind the unit for the power cable and condenser airflow. The cabinet back can be open or have a service opening; it does not need to be vented to outside air.
Electrical. Standard 115V / 15-amp outlet on its own circuit is ideal. The compressor draws hard on startup, and sharing a circuit with a microwave or disposal will trip the breaker eventually. Outlet should be inside the cabinet enclosure, not behind the unit on the wall β service tech needs to be able to pull the unit forward for repairs.
Leveling. These units must be level. If the door doesn't close flush after install, 90% of the time the floor is the problem. Use the adjustable feet, not shims.
A properly installed Allavino built-in looks like part of the cabinetry. A poorly installed one looks like a wine fridge that someone shoved into a hole. The difference is 30 minutes of measuring at the rough-in stage.
Door and finish: the details that don't show up in the spec sheet
Hinge side. This is the most common configuration mistake. The hinge needs to be on the opposite side from where you're standing when you open the door β which usually means on the side closer to a wall or perpendicular cabinet. If your kitchen island has the unit on the right side and you approach from the left, you want a left hinge (door swings open to the right, away from you). Mismatching this is irreversible without replacement.
Door color. Allavino offers stainless steel and black. Stainless matches most modern appliance packages and reads as "premium kitchen." Black disappears into dark cabinetry and reads as "custom millwork." If you have black slab cabinets, black is the move. Otherwise, stainless is the safer default.
Towel bar vs pro handle. The towel bar handle is the standard. The pro-style "WT" suffix on some SKUs indicates a thicker commercial-grade handle that matches Sub-Zero / Wolf aesthetics. If your range is a pro range, match the handle weight.
Door lock. All FlexCount II units include a key lock. If you have kids or you're storing high-value bottles in an accessible space, use it. Most buyers don't, and it's fine.
Three picks for three common scenarios
Scenario 1: Kitchen island, mixed drinker, 40-bottle collection. Go with the 24-inch FlexCount II 56-Bottle Dual Zone, Right Hinge. Two zones let you serve reds and whites from the same unit. 56 bottles gives you room to grow. The undercounter form factor drops into any standard cabinet opening.
Scenario 2: Dedicated wine wall, serious red collector, long-term aging. Go with the 24-inch FlexCount II 177-Bottle Single Zone, Stainless Steel. One zone held at 55Β°F is what your Bordeaux and Barolo actually need. 177 bottles is enough to hold a real cellar's worth of inventory without committing to a cooled room.
Scenario 3: Mid-size collection, both reds and whites, want flexibility. Go with the 24-inch FlexCount II 121-Bottle Dual Zone, Stainless Steel. The mid-height column splits the difference: serious capacity, two zones, doesn't dominate a wall like a full-height column does.

How long will it actually last?
Allavino's FlexCount II units use a compressor-based cooling system (not thermoelectric), which is the right call for any unit that's actually going to hold temperature. Expect 8β12 years of service life with normal use, assuming proper installation and you don't run it in a 90Β°F garage. The most common service issue at the 5β7 year mark is the door gasket. It's a $40 part and a 20-minute swap. Don't let a tired gasket convince you the whole unit needs replacement.
